George Victor Beard, 88, of Salt Lake City died Wednesday, December 4, 1996 in a Salt Lake hospital.

Dr. Beard was born August 10, 1908 in Coalville, Utah to Howard and Judith Anderson Beard. He was a graduate of the University of Utah and received his PhD from Purdue University in 1941. Dr. Beard was professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Utah from 1941-1950. He was also the director of Radiation Safety for the Atomic Energy Commission in Idaho Falls and Washington, D.C. from 1950-1962. From 1962-1970 he was professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Utah and then he became the director of Associated Western Universities until his retirement.

Dr. Beard was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Elise Jensen Beard in 1988; a sister, Vera; and his parents. He is survived by his present wife, Maxine, of Southern California; five children and their spouses, Judith (Rush) Hiltbrand, California; Barbara (Tom) Cannon, New Jersey; Richard (Rosalie) Beard, South Salt Lake; Winston (Carolyn) Beard, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Robert (Ann) Beard, Phoenix; sisters, Rhea Stacey, Coalville, Utah; and Norma Thomas, Ogden, Utah. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 7, 1996 at 11 a.m. at the Salt Lake Memorial Mausoleum and Mortuary, 1001 11th Avenue. Funeral directors, Salt Lake Memorial Mausoleum and Mortuary.
